The Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa awarded Lucky Star Canned Pilchards the right to print the Heart Mark on each can for three very good reasons:
- All fish have a good fatty acid profile which conforms to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa's stringent requirements for heart-healthy products.
- The polyunsaturated fats in Lucky Star Pilchards include high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, which help to control cholesterol levels and reduce the incidence of heart disease.
- Low salt levels in Lucky Star Pilchards guard against high blood pressure and therefore help to control heart disease.
"The Heart Mark is awarded to those products that qualify as part of a heart-healthy eating plan. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa recommends you eat fish at least twice a week. Darker-flesh fish such as Lucky Star Pilchards are a better choice, because usually the darker the flesh, the more Omega-3 fatty acids the fish contains; and it is the Omega-3 fatty acids which have such a positive effect on heart health."
