- Lucky Star Pilchards have already been cooked in the can and only need reheating, so do not overcook the recipe after adding the fish.
- Don't throw away the sauce from the can. Rather incorporate it into the meal as it is full of nutrients.
- Don't throw away the bones. They are soft and totally digestible and a good source of calcium.
- Rub your hands with a cut lemon before working with fish and any smell will wash off easily.
- If you find the smell and taste of pilchards too strong, cooking with cabbage will reduce both.
- Don't throw away the outside leaves of cabbage, spinach, beetroot and lettuces as they are full of iron, calcium and vitamin A. Rinse them, chop them up and add to soups and stews.
- Strangely enough, lycopene is more easily absorbed by the body if it has been processed in some way. An uncooked tomato, for instance, will not provide as much lycopene as one that has been cooked.
